Windows 10 preview build 14342 hit Insiders in Microsoft’s Fast Ring yesterday—a little earlier than scheduled, according to Petri.com. Here’s what’s new.
Edge Extensions and Updates
Users will see a lot of improvements for Edge extensions in this build, which like all fast ring previews is unstable should not be installed on your main production machine. Extensions can now be downloaded directly from Windows Store, and include the popular AdBlock and Adblock Plus.
Edge now also supports real-time web notifications, which will pop up in your Action Center if you’re working in another app. Swipe navigation in the browser lets you swipe to get back to your previous page.
Bash on Ubuntu Improvements
Adding Linux-based Bash support to Windows was a big deal for developers when announced at this year’s Build. This build adds support for symlinks within the Windows Subsystem for Linux to function on the mounted Windows directories. Users with non-Latin Windows usernames can now install Bash on Ubuntu on Windows. More Bash-related improvements are detailed in these release notes.
No More WiFi Sense
WiFi Sense, the feature that allowed users to share wifi passwords with contacts and be automatically connected to their networks, bit the dust with this update. If you liked having friends and associates use your wifi network, you’ll be disappointed. Otherwise, you’re not likely to care, as this was a little-used feature.
