Microsoft Cloud Solution Providers have a number of different service models which are standardized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The three primary models are Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS).
The three service models provide different levels of control over your computing power. IaaS most typically uses cloud orchestration technology to create a virtual machine. PaaS automates control of the infrastructure for the consumer, providing a pre-configured environment for application development. SaaS is the most abstract and usually involves a subscription for access to software through a web browser; with SaaS, the consumer interfaces with the product directly, rather than the infrastructure of the platform to create the product.

Service models for cloud solutions are sometimes falsely explained as different layers of a stack with Infrastructure as a Service at the bottom and Software as a Service at the top. However, they are better understood in relation to the problems they solve than which part of the system they are. In fact, these models can be combined to meet different needs. SaaS can be deployed without underlying PaaS or IaaS layers. Or one could deploy an application on IaaS with direct access rather than pairing it with SaaS.
